The Production Engineering Institute (PEI) provides research and development expertise in the Mechanical, Industrial and Manufacturing, Electrical and Chemical Engineering fields.

The Goals of PEI

To develop competitive engineering products, machinery and manufacturing systems for the industrial and socio-economic development of Zimbabwe and the region.

Institute Divisions

The institute expertise and activities are listed below under the institute divisions.

Manufacturing Engineering Division:

  • Automation and mechanization of production lines
  • Project management
  • Development and implementation of ISO 9000 quality systems
  • Maintenance Engineering and Management (Preventive, Predictive, Reliability Centered, Total Productive Maintenance, CMMS, Corrective and Minimizing Breakdown Maintenance Strategy)
  • Design, evaluation and planning of plant layouts
  • Manufacturing systems design
  • Establishment and implementation of best manufacturing models and customized management systems for different manufacturing organizations
  • Training of industrial personnel on all aspects of world-class manufacturing to ensure sustainability of implemented manufacturing solutions and continuous improvement
  • Capacity studies using Industrial Engineering Techniques
  • Logistics management

Engineering Analysis and Design Division:

  • Machine design and construction
  • Air conditioning and ventilation systems design (HVAC)
  • Design and development of material handling systems

Commercial Products

Completed Projects

Gravity Grinding Mill:

The mill is highly efficient, with one of the highest milling rates of 1.5 tons/h or 70 sec per bucket (20 kg) and has low maintenance costs

Maize Dehuller:

Prototype completed, tested and validated

Micro-concrete (MCR) Tile Making Machine:

The institute reverse engineered an MCR tile-making machine
