GEO-INFORMatION AND REMOTE SENSING INSTITUTE (GRSI) Position: REMOTE SENSING/GIS SCIENTIST – Geologist Reports to : Director – GRSIQualifications and ExperienceØ Minimum of a degree in Geology or Geophysics with strong and current geological interpretation and modeling skills Ø Must be a specialist in Remote Sensing and GIS applications in one or more of the following Ø Geology Ø Geophysics Ø Mineral exploration Ø Hydro-geology Ø Regional geochemistry DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:The Candidate must have: a) An outstanding written and verbal communication skills in order to be able to convey information and ideas through presentations and reports in a clear manner that engages the audience and helps them to understand the technical issues involved. b) Be self-motivated individual with the ability to multi-task in a dynamic environment. c) Confidence to tackle areas outside their comfort zone, merging their own skills with contributions from colleagues in other disciplines to resolve complex, multi-faceted problems. d) Proven ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams, and manage such teams when necessary. e) Ability to see the bigger picture. f) Willingness to travel is essential The duties of the candidate will include: a) Conduct high quality and timely geophysical interpretations and structural mapping across a range of depositional environments leading to the construction of maps and structural models. b) Integrate geophysical results with Remote Sensing and other sub surface disciplines in a GIS environment. c) Presenting conclusions of technical studies to team members and clients' representatives, both verbally and in formal reports. d) Provide support and mentoring to more junior staff in Geology and Geophysics - be proactive in developing geophysical skills and understanding amongst the team. e) Working with various clients - building strong commercial and technical relationships. f) Keep abreast of industry trends and challenges in relation to geophysical work practices. g) Participate in the commercialization activities of the institute. h) Conduct interdisciplinary research, product development and education. i) Provide leadership in the Geo-Information and Remote Sensing Institute. j) Supervise research and product development teams within a vigorous, externally funded research program k) Interact with government, industry and the community on RS and GIS applications. l) Write and publish scientific articles. m) Provide and assist in the digitization of any spatial data needed. n) Perform Image processing tasks and maintain an image database. o) Undertake GPS and other field measurements. p) Manage spatial data and maintain geographical databases. q) Maintain all records of data capturing work. r) Maintain the map and image filing system. s) Ensure that the Computers are in good working order and the network is protected from attack. t) Market the services offered by GRSI in Zimbabwe and the region, by preparing and distributing promotional materials. u) Responsible use equipment and assets in the computer laboratory and strong rooms at GRSI. v) Manage and supervise maintenance of all GRSI equipment. w) Participate efficiently in all related projects. x) Participate in income generating training courses. y) Participate in technical committees with relevance to your line of work. z) Assist in team building within the institute. aa) Provide weekly reports on your activities to divisional and institute meetings.
