Biotechnology Research Institute

About BRI

The Biotechnology Research Institute (BRI) of SIRDC is one of the 11 Research Institutes of SIRDC.

BRI uses the tools of conventional and molecular biotechnology in the areas of plant and animal improvement and production for the benefit of agriculture, science and mankind, leading to commercial application of research achievement.

Objectives


  • To research into plant and animal genetics, with a view to producing animal/crop varieties that will boost agricultural production in Zimbabwe.
  • To develop crop varieties suited for growth in marginal zones for the benefit of rural and small-scale farmers and to ensure food security.
  • To provide technical expertise in the collection, identification and conservation of valuable germplasm.
  • To take initiative in adapting biotechnology to the needs of agriculture, horticulture and various communities in Zimbabwe.
  • To provide advisory services on genetically modified organisms and food crops.
  • To participate in and provide advisory services in the area of Biosafety and Biodiversity.
