Natural Resources Management (NRM) Division

Industrial Environmental Management/Cleaner Production Centre (IEM/CPC) Division
Specializes in:
i. Industrial ecology
ii. Environmental management systems (EMS)
iii. Cleaner production (CP) and sustainable consumption
iv. Emissions monitoring and management (dust, particulates, gases, fumes)
v. Effluent analysis and management
vi. Occupational health and safety (OHS)

The IEM division encourages and assists industry to implement environmental management practices that increase economic and environmental performance. The IEM/CPC division’s multi-disciplinary team of research scientists is experienced in the application and use of modern tools and techniques for environmental management. The team is committed to providing quality services that enable industry to assess and improve resource use efficiency, and economic and environmental performance. The division’s close collaborative linkages with national and international organizations make it an international resource centre for diverse local and international clients.

Cleaner Production Centre (CPC) is a unit under ESI. In 1994, the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation and the Division of Technology, Industry and Economics of the United Nations Environment Programme combined their expertise and resources in an innovative joint initiative that established National Cleaner Production Centres in many developing countries in Africa and Asia. The centres were established to help developing countries and countries with economies in transition to build their own local cleaner production capacities.

The centre conducts training programmes to develop capacity for cleaner production. It promotes and demonstrates the use of cleaner production techniques and technologies that benefit both industry and the environment.

Environmental Technology Division

Specializes in:
i. Water treatment
ii. Wastewater treatment
iii. Resource recovery, reuse and recycling
iv. Wetland restoration and bioremediation

Waste Management Division
Specializes in:
i. Solid waste
ii. Hazardous waste
iii. Integrated waste management

Environmental Education Division
Specializes in:
i. Development of curricula
ii. Adverts, jingles, etc.
iii. State of the Environment Reporting.

Analytical Services Division
Specializes in:
i. Water quality analysis
ii. Wastewater analysis
iii. Soil contamination analysis,
iv. Biotic index analysis
v. Air quality analysis

ESI also provides specialist services on Climate Change with special emphasis on:
i. Energy and the Environment
ii. Clean Development Mechanisms
iii. Ozone depletion
