Production Engineering Institute

ABOUT PEI

The Production Engineering Institute (PEI) plays a pivotal role in all the operations at SIRDC, and as such PEI scientists and engineers are found in project teams across all institutes at the Centre.
The institute employs Research Engineers as well as Technicians with expertise in the Mechanical, Industrial & Manufacturing, Electrical and Chemical Engineering fields.


THE GOALS OF THE PEI

PEI is charged with the responsibility of developing competitive engineering products, machinery and manufacturing systems for the socio-economic development of Zimbabwe and the region.


INSTITUTE DIVISIONS

1 MANUFACTURING ENGINEERING DIVISION

The division has expertise to assist the industry in the following areas:
- Automation and mechanisation of production lines.
- Project management.
- Development and implementation of ISO 9000 quality systems.
- Maintenance Engineering and Management (Preventive, Predictive, Reliability Centred, TPM, CMMS, Corrective and Minimising Breakdown Maintenance Strategies).
- Design, evaluation and planning of plant layouts.
- Manufacturing systems design.
- Production and inventory management.
- Establishment and implementation of best manufacturing models and customised management systems for different manufacturing organisations.
- Training of industrial personnel on all aspects of world-class manufacturing to ensure sustainability of implemented manufacturing solutions and continuous improvement.
- Capacity studies using Industrial Engineering techniques
- Logistics management.

2. ENGINEERING ANALYSIS AND DESIGN DIVISION
The division’s main activities are as follows:
- Machine design and construction.
- Air-conditioning and ventilation systems design (HVAC)

3 POLYMER SCIENCE/TECHNOLOGY DIVISION
Expertise is available in the following areas:
- Material and process selection.
- Process trouble shooting and failure analysis.
- Material characterization.
- Product formulations/improvement & substitution
