THE SIRDC SOLAR DRYER
Harnessing nature's gift for a better living!
The SIRDC Energy Technology Institute, is producing
an environmentally friendly vegetable/fruit, fish/meat drying unit. The
solar drying technique is steeped in 'green' philosophy and the cleaner
production development mechanism.
The Solar Dryer is modeled on a modular design and
is capable of drying small quantities (10kg) to large quantities (modularized
as required). The Solar Dryer is rugged and durable.
- Drying period varies with weather conditions but
on a bright sunny day 8 hours is sufficient time to dry most vegetables
and fruits.
- Vegetables and fruits commonly dried are cabbage,
okra, cowpea leaf, covo, tsunga, tomato, potato, onion, apple, banana,
piri-piri, mango, pawpaw, etc. Blanching before drying increases the
texture of the dried product.
- Indirect sun drying retains micro-nutrients such
as proteins and vitamins. The dried product is also protected from insect
infestation such as flies that are vectors of disease, and from dirt.
