Mr Stenford Mushiri is the Director of the Environmental Science Institute (ESI) at SIRDC. He joined SIRDC in May 2007 as a Senior Research Scientist in the Food and Biomedical Technology Institute and was subsequently promoted to his current position in September 2010. Prior to joining SIRDC, Mr Mushiri was a Lecturer in Environmental Sciences at Bindura University of Science Education from 2005 to 2007. Before that he was Director of Chalstech Soil Consultancy, a provider of soil related and environmental solutions from 1996 to 2004. He was also a part time lecturer to post graduate students in Soil Fertility and Tropical Soils in the Department of Crop Science at the University of Zimbabwe where he also previously worked as a temporary full-time lecturer in Soil Chemistry in the Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Mechanisation. From 1983 to 1998, Mr Mushiri was a Principal Chemist at the Department of Research and Specialist Services, Ministry of Agriculture. He also lectured in Soil Conservation at Chibero Agricultural College from 1981 to 1983.
As Director of ESI, Mr Mushiri has gained significant experience in conducting environmental impact assessments (EIAs), remediation of degraded lands and waters, watershed management, industrial hygiene assessments, waste management, baseline surveys and environmental management systems. His background provides the Institute with broad expertise in all environmental issues.
Mr Mushiri holds a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture from the University of Sierra Leone as well as a Masters degree in Soil Chemistry and Fertility from West Virginia University, USA. He has several publications to his name.
